Study: Networks Support Democrats’ Values

Well … der!

coverage does not reflect the political make-up of the Democrats and Republicans in Congress. is exceedingly likely to cover news through a partisan filter. So it’s no surprise that liberals and conservatives are polarized when it comes to news sources they trust and utilize.

In 2019, Media Research Center analyzed 540 hours of news coverage on and MSNBC over three randomly-selected weeks. The two networks conducted nearly the same number of interviews with members of Congress. In total, they interviewed 284 Democratic members of congress compared to just 40 Republican. MSNBC leaned even more to the left, as they interviewed 148 Democrats and only 11 republicans.

Both networks gave opposing questions to the Republicans but gave friendly questions to the Democrats. Meaning, they focused on Democratic talking points and agendas.

It’s common practice to ask a political interviewee to give an answer to the argument of the opposite side, but consistently asking Republicans to answer to Democratic talking points, while hardly ever asking Democrats to do the same thing, speaks to the fact that the networks are actually choosing sides.

Eric Merkley, a contributor to the American and Policy website who specializes in public opinion and political communication, recently studied 400,000 news stories on published over three decades and found that the mainstream portrayed liberal politicians in a better light than their conservative colleagues.

The news stories were on unemployment and between 1985 and 2013 from the and a variety of mainstream newspapers, including the New York Times, USA Today, and those with histories of backing the Republican Party, such as and .

He found that the tenor on economic news is more favorable during Democratic presidencies compared to Republican. He also found that only Republican administrations are treated with more negative coverage in response to short-term increases in unemployment or the inflation rate.

While Griping About Biden Being Taken Out Of Context, Host Takes Trump Out Of Context

host took President ‘s remarks out of context Friday — while complaining that Trump’s team had taken ‘s remarks out of context.

Mitchell referenced the former vice president’s slip of the tongue Thursday — “Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids” — as he spoke about education opportunities to an audience that was primarily Asian and Hispanic.

She complained that a tweet from the Trump campaign’s Rapid Response Director Andrew Clark left out the context of Biden’s comment. (RELATED: Biden Buckles, Flips On Hyde Amendment Under Pressure From Democrats)

And while Clark’s caption may not have included Biden’s immediate reaction — a pause and then an attempt to clarify — the video included in his tweet did.

And the other thing we should do is we should challenge these students. We should challenge students in these schools, have advanced placement programs in these schools. We have this notion that somehow if you’re poor, you cannot do it. Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids. Wealthy kids, white kids, Asian kids.

But while Mitchell was complaining about Clark and others omitting the context, she defended Biden’s attacks that took Trump’s words out of context. “It comes after this confrontation between Biden and a reporter from conservative outlet Breitbart — Biden fighting back after the reporter claimed, incorrectly, Biden had misquoted the president after ,” she said.

The Breitbart reporter in the video clip Mitchell shared confronted Biden, claiming that President Trump had very clearly condemned white supremacy, while Biden argued, as he has since he first announced his run for president, “Let’s get this straight. He said, ‘there are very fine people in both groups,’ they’re chanting anti-semitic slogans, carrying flags.”

But a look at the president’s full remarks following the unrest in Charlottesville, showed that the reporter was right, that Biden had taken Trump’s words out of context and that Mitchell had doubled down, accepting Biden’s misquote as the whole story.
