Goshen workers protest possible move to Mexico

Last week, Cequent management made public a preliminary decision to move the work to Mexico, with a final decision to be made on November 19th.

While dozens of Cequent workers today lined the streets and shouted at passing cars and trucks, they also quietly made calls to the likes of the editors of the Times.

“It’s not to embarrass them (Cequent), it’s to tell them that we’re here for you, we’ve been here for all these years and we need the job, the United States needs these jobs now,” said Deb Hathaway, Vice President of United Steelworkers local 9550.

A source close to the situation tells News Center 16 that the overall cost for production workers at the plant is $28.78 per hour, while the total cost for production labor in Mexico is just $4.08. The source said the overall cost of skilled labor at the Goshen plant is $32.83, while in Mexico it’s just $5.53.

Study: Police often fail to ‘click it’

A 2011 by the NHTSA of crash data involving law enforcement found that 55 percent of 733 on-duty officers who died in crashes between 1980 and 2008 did not have their seat belts fastened.

And 19 percent of them, or 139 officers, were ejected from their vehicles. Compare that to an estimated 84 percent of U.S. drivers who do use their seat belts.

“Well, that’s not fair at all. If I have to use mine, so do the cops who write the tickets,” Lafayette resident Brian Collins told The Star Press of Muncie. “They need to lead by example.”

Indiana had 19 officer fatalities during the NHTSA report’s time frame.

TriMas Corporation Reports Record Third Quarter Results – Yahoo! Finance

Net sales for third quarter increased 6.7% compared to the year ago period, resulting primarily from increased sales within the original equipment and retail channels. Sales increases were the result of newer product launches and continued market share gains. Third quarter operating profit increased compared to the prior year period as a result of higher sales levels, excluding the costs incurred related to the relocation of certain production to a lower cost country. Third quarter operating profit margin declined slightly primarily due to an increase in selling, general and administrative expenses in support of an acquisition in Brazil and other growth initiatives, and a less favorable product sales mix. The Company continues to reduce fixed costs and leverage Cequent’s strong brand positions and new products for increased market share in the United States and faster growing markets.
