After Trump‘s epic press conference yesterday, the media had a collective freakout. This is only a small sample of their smug reaction.
Then there’s this little meltdown:
This not a laughing matter. I'm sorry, delegitimizing the press is unAmerican
— Chuck Todd (@chucktodd) February 16, 2017
Sorry Chuck, free speech, debate, and calling out disinformation isn’t ‘un-American.’ Intentionally spreading lies, as the media has been doing for years, in order to damage and destroy people and institutions is un-American. Using the media to lie and destroy political opponents is actually a hallmark of totalitarianism.
CBS anchor John Dickerson even agreed with Trump.
The press did all that good work ruining its reputation on its own, and we can have a long conversation about what created that.
Here’s the reality … I’ve been in radio for a dozen years. It used to be 1-2 times a week we’d find a blatantly fake news story. There were always lots of stories that were spun a certain way, but absolutely false reports weren’t that common. Today, I find several examples a day of fake news. The media is clearly not doing what it’s supposed to do, which is to tell the truth.
The fact that so many media outlets continue to refuse to be honest is what’s led to their being so distrusted by the American people. For many years now, the people have had little confidence in the media, and for good reason. This week Gallop released a new poll showing just 32% of people have trust in the media. That trust has been steadily declining for 20 years, and it’s recent decline is the steepest it’s ever been.
As you can see from the chart, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents all have lost trust in the media.
The media can attack Trump as dishonest all they want, but the data shows the American people think Trump is more trustworthy than the media is. A full 10% more.
